Today, thousands of bloggers are putting their two cents in on the subject of the environment. While I'm not sitting in any trees protesting, wearing hemp, or becoming vegan, I have been making very conscious and thoughtful baby steps in a greener direction over the past few years.
The biggie? Driving. Since I work at home, I put less than 1,000 miles per year on my car.
Whenever possible, I buy locally grown produce. Every two weeks, I get a delivery of mostly locally grown, organic produce from muy fantastico Pioneer Organics. That is an exciting day around here, especially for my produce-loving hound. As wonderful as the produce is, I'm simply physically incapable of mustering the same enthusiasm that Roscoe has for the delivery guy.
We use a high-efficiency, front-loading washer. It uses MUCH less water. We also use a concentrated liquid detergent, so there's less of that as well.
I've used cloth grocery bags on and off for almost 20 years, but not until lately did I do it with consistency. Behold Envirosax! These gorgeous and very hip cloth bags can be tightly rolled and stashed in my purse without disturbing the balance of the other contents. I also love (and use) these cloth produce bags. I still need plastic grocery bags on occasion (aforementioned hound's output), but the Envirosax make it possible to be stylish and green. Yay!
And the usual suspects: using fewer consumables around the house and in my office, aggressively recycling paper and anything else that can be recycled, and even keeping the thermostat at a lower setting.
See? It's not that hard!
