Super Happy Fun Stuff: Search Engine Decoder

March 27, 2007

I'm frequently asked about search engines and search engine optimization by my clients. I started to really bone up on this topic about a year or eighteen months ago so I could say something that sounded the tiniest bit intelligent when asked.

One of the things that surprised me the most in my studies was just how interdependent search engines are on each other, and that there are only a handful of search engines that really matter: Google (duh), Yahoo, MSN, and Ask (formerly AskJeeves).

I found a fun page that illustrates the interdependencies quite well: the Search Engine Decoder.

Click on any of the search engines pictured there, and you can see who feeds whom and how. The information is presented in an easy-to-understand fashion...and in my book, anything that lifts the veil of mystery off of search engines, even just a little, is very cool.
