What a difference a year makes...
December 30, 2006
The end of a year is a goldmine for a list lover like myself. One of my favorites each year is the BBC's "100 things we didn't know this time last year."
Here are few highlights from 2006:
- Mohammed is now one of the 20 most popular names for boys born in England and Wales.
- Baboons can tell the difference between English and French. Zoo keepers at Port Lympne wild animal park in Kent (UK) are having to learn French to communicate with the baboons which had been transferred from Paris zoo.
- In America it's possible to subpoena a dog.
- "Restaurant" is the most mis-spelled word in search engines.
- Pulling your foot out of quicksand takes a force equivalent to that needed to lift a medium-sized car.
- Koalas have fingerprints exactly like humans (although obviously smaller).
What did I learn in 2006?
- That it gets very cold in Seattle, and my Bay Area wardrobe was almost comically inappropriate.
- Never, ever buy a new construction house if it's not already in the postal database.
- Having packers pack your household goods for your move is not as ideal as it might seem, especially when you are looking for an office item that has been packed in a box marked "tools" and left in the garage.
- Most importantly, that you can learn and grow from even the most difficult clients.
I can't wait to see what 2007 will bring...
