Anthony Casalena is a Standup Guy

August 16, 2006

As you may remember from earlier this week, I was having some issues with the tech support at SquareSpace. Not only did the answer to my question really upset me, it put me in a very bad position with a client because we were at a point where I had to go with one platform, and SquareSpace was much more appropriate to her needs than the backup idea we were considering. I was very unhappy and feeling a little trapped by all of this.

Monday night I got a completely unsolicited email from Anthony, the founder/developer/big cheese over there. He was on vacation, but I guess he got wind of what was going on, and he was not happy about it.

All I will say is that he handled the situation very well, giving me his full support, as well as suggestions on how to better use the product. (And by suggestions I mean real hints applicable to an advanced user, not suggestions like my mother-in-law might offer.)

And he will probably hate me saying this, and I hate saying it because I feel really damn old right for doing it, but I thought the grace he displayed when he contacted me and in his subsequent replies showed great maturity. He's a young guy, who started the company in his dorm room a few years ago (unless he's like that creepy guy in his late 30s who was living in my dorm when I was at Cal, which I doubt), and he showed more maturity than many folks I know a decade or more older.

Anthony, my friend, you are very cool. And I look forward to bringing lots of folks over to SquareSpace in the months to come.

Thanks again for being so understanding.

It's really hard to ensure the proper message is being sent out by everyone in the organization, and I'll step in every time Squarespace has a misstep. Hopefully, that'll happen less and less as time goes on.

How tough it really is to grow properly :)
