Get over it and keep blogging

May 18, 2006

John Jantsch writes in his Duct Tape Marketing Blog today about bloggers who who get a little nutty when someone (whether it be mainstream press or even another blogger) criticizes blogging.

Every time bloggers post these emotional responses, they actually hurt the reputation of blogging as a business tool. Look, blogging is an effective marketing tool, anyone who has used it as such knows that, but, it ain't a religion, it doesn't need to be defended.

And he's absolutely right...for anything to gain general acceptance and be taken seriously, the most vocal group in favor of whatever it is can't be a bunch of raving lunatics.

I'm not easily persuaded on most things, but I'm more likely to follow the lead of someone who has quietly and effectively worked an idea or a product into their day-to-day life than the in-your-face rantings of someone who digs through the garbage outside of Starbucks and insists Mossad has planted a chip in his brain.

I'm all for the evangelism of a great product or an idea. I recommend things to clients and peers on a daily basis - things I know to work, services that can make a real difference for a small business. Like blogging. But I don't do it by throwing the virtual equivalent of a tantrum when ever someone criticizes my precious blogging. I just keep blogging because I know it works. And that's the most persuasive argument out there.
