Those who plant quality, harvest loyalty

April 12, 2006

During our second trip to France in late 2004, we spent several days in Beaune, a quaint little city in the heart of Burgundy. I was enthralled with the pedestrian-only streets and the well-manicured public areas (even in late November). And yes, the wine. Definitely the wine.

I took this picture while sitting in the town center, as I loved the gorgeous blue Christmas decorations on the boutique's white facade. We did not go in, as it was just one of many cellars or wine shops within the old city walls, and we were on our way to some other destination at that point.

I didn't think much about it until I joined Flickr a number of months later and was uploading the pictures from our trip. I kind of felt bad for not knowing what this building was was, so I found the winery's web site (which seems to have gone missing in the past week) so I could at least acknowledge their lovely boutique and maybe learn something about Chateau Ganoux. And where I least expected it, I found this:

Qui sème la qualité, récolte la confiance.

In English: Those who plant quality, harvest loyalty.

I have no idea if that has been the family's motto for decades or even centuries, or if some hot-shot marketing expert came in and convinced them they needed a catch phrase.

I just like it, as they are important words no matter what you "grow."
