Establish a relationship before you need it

February 5, 2006

Like so many other people, I was delighted when I discovered that venture capitalist-entrepreneur-Mac evangelist-author-Bay Area legend Guy Kawasaki had finally started blogging.

He is extremely insightful, as you might expect, but his posts are also highly readable. I've been putting off linking to him for several weeks because I have an honest fear that my blog will just become one big Guy Kawasaki link-and-love fest.

But I can't hold back any longer...a post from earlier this week, The Art of Schmoozing, was so perfect I just had to share.

I've figured out that it's much easier to make a sale, build partnerships, create joint ventures--you name it--with people that you already know than with people you just met.

While I've always known that on one level or another, it has really been driven home to me in the past several months as I moved my business into a distinctly different incarnation.

I'm still working my butt off (and don't get me wrong...I love it), but there's no way I'd have done as much as I have recently without the relationships I've developed over the past few years.

Here are Guy's tips:

  • Understand the goal.
  • Get out.
  • Ask good questions, then shut up.
  • Unveil your passions.
  • Read voraciously.
  • Follow up.
  • Make it easy to get in touch.
  • Give favors.
  • Ask for the return of favors.

Read the full post here, with details on each item.

I especially appreciate #4: Unveil your Passions. This goes hand-in-hand with being truly authentic...and that's made such a huge difference in the evolution of my business over the last few months.
