About this time last year, I saw something in the newspaper announcing that David Sedaris would be at Flint Center in Cupertino in April. Sam and I had seen him read once before a couple of years ago, and we were terribly excited at the prospect of seeing him a second time. Funniest. Person. Ever. And he lives in France, which is a bonus in my book.
When I tried to buy tickets for that show, I found a fundamental disconnect. The ad in the newspaper announced the show as being on April 30, 2005, whereas Ticketmaster had the show as April 30, 2006...and Flint Center's web site had no mention at all. I tried to contact Flint Center to get to the root of the discrepancy, with no luck. I guess they don't answer email there.
I was paralyzed with indecision as a result...if I couldn't find out the actual date, I couldn't bring myself to buy the tickets. I consoled myself by listening to the audio book version of Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim on my iPod yet again.
And then I got caught up in the whirlwind that was my life in 2005, and in the midst of everything that happened I forgot all about him. And I probably could have used the laugh.
As it turns out, the show is still to come...on April 30, 2006. We met Mike and Heather for our annual Christmas dinner, and there they were, neatly wrapped in a Crate and Barrel box (the same Crate and Barrel box I used for part of Heather's birthday present in October, if I'm correct)...two tickets to David Sedaris!
Needless to say, I am very excited. Not only do I get to see David Sedaris again (and in reserved orchestra section seats no less...no queuing up several hours beforehand to get into the general admission Rio Theater in Santa Cruz this time), but I have something to look forward to...my favorite thing in the world.
Update, later Sunday evening: Check out the comments for this event on upcoming.org...I guess I'm not the only one who was a little confused by the disparate dates...I'm guessing whoever put the ad into the Mercury News last year got their butt kicked for the wrong date.
