You win, Internet Explorer...

November 10, 2005

BUT just this once...

I've been struggling with Internet Explorer's complete refusal to display CSS correctly ever since I launched my revised site back in August. I could have sworn that it worked when I was testing it, but I must have been drunk or something, because it looked like crap in IE when I finally launched.

I knew it would take a teardown of part of the CSS to fix it, and I just didn't have the time. Or the stomach for it.

I consoled myself with the thought that surely anyone smart enough to explore my site or read my blog would be smart enough to use Firefox. Call me friggin' Pollyanna.

My site stats show that about 78% of my site visitors use IE 6. People, for the love of god...what do I have to do to get you to understand that Firefox is really your only choice when it comes to browers? I don't think I'm being too dramatic here.

Aside from very serious security vulnerabilities on IE's part, it just doesn't play nice. It flat out refuses to properly display CSS. Web standards. What we should all be working toward...not sucky Microsoft-made "standards" that only work properly on Microsoft products.

I found a great demo of just how IE screws with CSS on Position is Everything. These folks get it.

I finally broke down and fixed the CSS...it took several rounds of playing and revsions, and I'm not sure if it is completely perfect yet. I had to make some changes to my beloved layout, THE FACT OF WHICH I HATE. But I think this will do. I can only dig in my heels for so long.

Damn you Microsoft.
