Stop Trying to Be Perfect and Start Being Remarkable is the subtitle for The Big Moo, a collection of essays by 33 of today's brightest business thinkers. It has also been my mantra for the past week or so, informing my actions as I've been in the midst of some big changes with my own business.
It won't be out for another week or so, but I got my hands on an advance copy thanks to the Penguin Bzz Channel at BzzAgent. But you can pre-order your copy at Amazon!
Edited by Seth Godin, contributors include Malcolm Gladwell, Tom Peters, Guy Kawasaki, Dan Pink, and Seth himself. The pieces are not identified by their respective authors, and I went into reading this thinking I would spend much of the time playing "who-wrote-what" in my mind.
Not so! I became so captivated by the simplicity of the message - "be remarkable" - that I just went with the flow, from one story to the next, soaking it all in. And I love The Big Moo, in all of its glorious simplicity.
I think my favorite essay is Talking About the Weather, which discusses the simple act of finding common ground to build relationships and trust:
Honoring the simple reality of another person's experience is an instant link to the bigger world outside one's self. It's the seed of empathy, and it's free.
and...
...If you can't talk about the weather with your co-workers, what chance to you have in getting them to believe in you? Talking about the weather is a baby step on your way to making change.
I think this particular piece stood out for me because it reflects where I am right now...building new relationships, nurturing existing ones (while taking them in new directions), and looking for common ground as I make change for myself and experiment with this "being fearless" stuff.
Straightfoward, easy-to-read, and at the same time very powerful...I highly recommend The Big Moo, whether you work for yourself, in small company, or a large corporation. There is a story there for everyone, for every situation, on being remarkable.

The book will be released in the next week or two. You can pre-order it from Amazon (or just about any other bookseller).
