Blurring the Line between Work and Play

September 20, 2005

Keith over at To-Done has another thoughtful post...this time about making work more fun. Even if you love your job, there will inevitably be certain aspects of it that grow tedious. It's always handy to have a few tricks up your sleeve to cut loose and make the day go faster.

I've always been a big believer in making the most out of any work environment. One of the best jobs I ever had had nothing to do with the actual work (believe me, it SUCKED), but the amazing friendships that I developed with a number of my coworkers. In the years since I left that particular gig, I have recognized that we all may have been close because the work environment was yucky...misery loves company!

Having fun at work becomes a whole different beast when you are a solopreneur, especially one who works from a home office. Once you've gotten a handle on the distractions that come with the territory (after five years I'm still waiting for that to happen...when will my mother understand that I'm not always available to chat about "just one thing"?), you find your fun where you can...and often in surprising places.

My own "fun at work" kit these days is comprised of taking a few minutes to read some amusing or gossipy blogs, playing with my dog when I need a break, or celebrating Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day. I'd like to add rolling in large amounts of cash to that list.

I still have my collection of desk toys and the funny things I had pinned to the wall of whatever cubicle I was inhabiting. I don't seem to have as much room for this stuff since I've worked from home, but when I periodically come across the chart where we compared peoples' head sizes (hey, we published statistics software...it was funny at the time...I swear!) or the fake ads we made lampooning my boss, I never fail to smile.
